Difference between cheetah and leopard
Cheetah and leopard have been knowing the same word for a long time and are surprised to know that the two words and animals are different today?
Hmm, cheetah and leopard are actually two different species of animals.
There are some obvious differences between them. Without making the post long by discussing all the differences, let's know some of the major differences.
Differences:
1.
Scientific name of Cheetah
Acinonyx jubatus (Schreber, 1775).
Scientific Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Suborder: Feliformia
Family: Felidae
Subfamily: Felinae
Genus: Acinonyx
Species: A. jubatus
Binomial name: Acinonyx jubatus
(Schreber, 1775)
And the scientific name of Leopard is Panthera pardus (Linnaeus, 1758).
Scientific Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
border: Feliformia
Family: Felidae
Subfamily: Pantherinae
Genus: Panthera
Species: P. pardus
Binomial name:
Panthera pardus (Linnaeus, 1758)
2.
Cheetah's head is small.
On the other hand Leopard/Leopard's head is medium in shape and slightly thin. Or you can say bigger than a cheetah.
3.
There are black tear marks from under the eyes on both sides of the cheetah's nose, it seems that black tears flowed from the eyes of the cheetah and ended up on both sides of the face.
And leopard/cheetah does not have this tear mark. See the image in the comments.
4.
Cheetahs do not have rosettes. Cheetah has black dots on its body. And there is no empty space between these points.
The black spots on leopard/cheetah look like rose petals, hence they are called rosettes. The rosette has a blank space, not a black dot.
5.
Cheetah is the fastest animal, not leopard. Cheetahs can run at speeds of 80 to 128 km/h (50–80 mph).
And the leopard can run at a speed of about 58 km/h.
6.
Cheetahs have very long legs, which is why they can run so fast. Moreover, its relatively thin build and long tail also facilitate its speed.
On the other hand, the structure of the leopard is very similar to that of the tiger, you can say the small size of the Royal Bengal Tiger. Its tail is longer than a cheetah.
7.
Looking at the cheetah's stomach, it looks like they haven't eaten for days. A cheetah's stomach is lean, while a leopard's stomach is quite hearty and full.
8.
Location:
Leopards are more widespread in the world than cheetahs.
The forest of Jalpaiguri in India, probably also found in the forest of our Chittagong Hill Tracts. Besides, they are found in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southern Russia, Central Asia, Indian subcontinent, Southeast and East Asia.
9.
Cheetahs hunt during the day, but leopards hunt at night.
10.
Leopard:
Shoulder: Male typical 60–70 cm
Female: 57–64 cm
Their body length including head is 90 - 196 cm and tail is 66 to 102 cm.
Weight: Male 37-90 kg
Female 28-60 kg
Size varies geographically. These are average sizes.
The male leopard has a larger body than the female leopard. Leopard ears are round.
There are 8 subspecies of leopards.
Cheetah:
Shoulder: 67–94 cm. (26–37 inches)
Their head to body length
1.1 m to 1.5 m (3 ft 7 in to 4 ft 11 in).
Location: Found only in Africa and Iran.
Mass: 21 to 72 kg (46 to 159 lb) and tail 60–80 cm. (24–31 inches) is common.
Cheetah subspecies: 4
A. j. heck,
A. j. jubatus,
A. j. soemmeringii,
A. j. venaticus
11.
A cheetah cannot roar like a leopard.
12.
Leopards are also more adept at climbing trees than cheetahs. Cheetahs have also been seen climbing trees, but their claws are more efficient for running than for climbing. Leopards are famous for climbing trees.
In a head-to-head fight, the leopard usually wins over the cheetah due to its larger size and aggressive mentality.
A close relative of the leopard, there is another animal with a skin similar to that of the leopard, called the jaguar.
They are stronger than leopards.
Just as leopards have rosettes on their skin, so do jaguars. However, in the case of jaguars, black dots can be seen between their rosettes.
Jaguars are found only in the Americas (South America, Central America and Mexico).
